The growing importance of cybersecurity in our increasingly digital world was the focus of a compelling keynote address delivered by Hon. Adedeji Dhikrullahi Olajide, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on ICT and Cybersecurity. Speaking at the ongoing Seminar on Cybersecurity for Belt and Road Countries in Shanghai, China, Hon. Olajide underscored the critical need for international collaboration in tackling the evolving challenges of cybersecurity.
Organized by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and the Shanghai Municipal Government, the seminar has gathered experts and policymakers from over 20 countries. Their mission: to discuss and strategize on cybersecurity challenges and opportunities within the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
Addressing the conference on behalf of the participants, Hon. Olajide highlighted the growing threats to national security, economic development, and social stability posed by cyber-attacks. He emphasized that these threats are transnational and require a collective response.
“The cybersecurity threats we face today are transnational in nature, and no single country can tackle them alone,” Hon. Olajide stated. “It is imperative that we work together to share knowledge, best practices, and resources to build a safer and more secure digital environment.”
Hon. Olajide also noted that Nigeria’s active participation in the seminar reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening cybersecurity, both within its borders and on the international stage. This involvement aligns with Nigeria’s broader goals of promoting international cooperation in critical areas such as cybersecurity.
The seminar includes presentations, panel discussions, and hands-on training sessions covering a wide range of topics, including cybersecurity governance, threat intelligence, and capacity building. These sessions are designed to enhance the skills of participants and foster deeper cooperation among the BRI countries.
As the CIFAL Shanghai Conference continues, participants are expected to develop a joint statement that will outline key recommendations for enhancing cybersecurity cooperation among BRI countries. This conference serves as a pivotal platform for knowledge sharing and collaborative efforts aimed at building a more secure digital future.
