Rep. Adedeji Dhikrullahi Olajide, popularly known as Odidiomo, a distinguished member of the House of Representatives and chairman of the House Committee on Digital and Information Communication, has called for a state of emergency on digital literacy in Nigeria. During an interview on Lagelu FM, Odidiomo emphasized the critical need for Nigeria to prioritize digital literacy and skills acquisition, particularly among the youth, to effectively navigate the burgeoning digital economy.
He likened data to the new “gold”, asserting its pivotal role in driving economic growth and development, and drew parallels between data and oil, stressing the necessity for Nigeria to adapt to this digital age. Odidiomo asserted the inevitability of Nigeria’s digital future, and stressed the imperative for Nigerian youths to possess digital competency to remain competitive on the global stage. He cautioned against the dire consequences of lagging behind in the ongoing digital revolution, urging proactive measures to equip Nigerian youths with the requisite skills. Expanding on the economic ramifications, Odidiomo highlighted how digital literacy can bolster youth employability and contribute to the nation’s GDP growth.
He advocated for strategic investments in digital infrastructure, training, and skills acquisition, envisioning Nigeria as a burgeoning hub for digital innovation and entrepreneurship.
