UI VC Calls on Nigerians to Support

The Vice-Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Prof. Kayode Oyebode Adebowale, FAS, mni has submitted that the government alone cannot run universities, thereby calling on all and sundry to support federal universities to achieve their teaching, learning and research mandates without compromising standards.

The Vice-Chancellor stated this while commissioning the self-help renovated office of the Head of Department, the Department of Human Kinetics, Faculty of Education.

While noting that adequate funding is very critical to sustaining tertiary institutions and making teaching and learning conducive, Adebowale said poor funding is adversely affecting the federal universities as the government keeps giving inadequate funds and making limiting policies.

In a bid to sustain the legacy of Nigerian tertiary institutions, Prof. Adebowale called on private institutions and individuals to support the three government interventions: Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Needs Assessment, and Capital Appropriation Grant, that the federal government had made available to institutions.

He asserted that, “Government alone cannot run universities; some hands must have to come to support. We run around to scout for funds for the university.”

The VC said he was, therefore, pleased to commission the multimillion-naira self-help project that was donated by alumni and friends of the Department of Human Kinetics.

Earlier in his speech, the Head of Department, Prof. O. A. Adegbesan had said that donors of the project were happy to have accomplished the projects in order to sustain the department.
