Hon. Adedeji Dhikrulahi Stanley Olajide (Odidi-Omo), member representing Ibadan North-West/Ibadan South-West Federal Constituency and Chairman of the House Committee on ICT and Cybersecurity, has called for a stronger technology-driven approach to addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.
Speaking on the floor of the House of Representatives during deliberations on insecurity and recent cases of abduction across the country, Odidi-Omo expressed concern over the growing threat posed by criminal elements operating in remote locations and forested areas that often remain beyond the reach of conventional surveillance methods.
Referencing the recent abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State, he noted that the continued occurrence of such incidents demands more than routine responses. According to him, Nigeria must begin to leverage modern technology as a critical component of its national security strategy.
The lawmaker argued that many criminal activities thrive in areas that are difficult to monitor, making it necessary for the country to invest in technologies capable of providing better visibility, intelligence gathering, and real-time surveillance.
While acknowledging ongoing investments in critical sectors such as roads and power, Odidi-Omo maintained that similar attention must be given to technological infrastructure that can support the work of the military, law enforcement agencies, intelligence services, and other security institutions.
During his contribution, he proposed an amendment calling for increased investment in satellite technology and other advanced systems that can help strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture and improve the country’s ability to detect, monitor, and respond to security threats.
According to him, technology has become an indispensable tool in modern security operations around the world, and Nigeria cannot afford to be left behind in deploying innovative solutions to protect lives and property.
He emphasized that strategic investments in technology would not only empower security agencies but also help uncover criminal activities that often remain hidden from traditional security operations.
“Every legislative support that is required, you can be rest assured that we will take it, support it and institutionalize it,” he stated, reaffirming the commitment of the National Assembly to initiatives that enhance national security and strengthen the country’s technological capabilities.
Odidi-Omo further stressed that securing Nigeria requires a combination of political will, adequate funding, modern infrastructure, and the deployment of the right technologies capable of addressing evolving security threats.
His intervention reflects a growing call for innovation-driven solutions to insecurity and highlights the important role technology can play in building a safer, more secure, and more prosperous Nigeria for all.
