As Nigeria commemorated Democracy Day 2025, Hon. Adedeji Stanley Olajide, popularly known as Odidiomo, joined fellow lawmakers for a historic joint sitting of the National Assembly in Abuja — a moment that underscored both the symbolism of June 12 and the enduring responsibility of elected leaders.
The special session featured a direct address from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who opted to speak from the National Assembly chamber rather than deliver a televised nationwide broadcast. This act, witnessed by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, and other high-ranking government officials, was a bold nod to the legislature’s role as the bedrock of democratic governance.
Speaking on the significance of the day, Hon. Olajide noted:
“June 12 represents the soul of our democratic journey — a date born from sacrifice, people’s will, and a refusal to let power silence truth. As a legislator, I remain committed to defending those ideals, ensuring that democracy delivers not just elections, but equity, justice, and development.”
The Ibadan-born federal lawmaker used the occasion to call for unity, accountability, and a renewed focus on inclusive governance — particularly as Nigeria navigates complex economic and social realities.
Known for his progressive stance on digital inclusion and youth empowerment, Odidiomo believes that the best way to honour June 12 is to continue building systems that truly work for the people — from policy to infrastructure, and from education to technology.
