In a significant move, the House of Representatives has pledged to propel Nigeria’s information technology potential to global prominence through the enactment of relevant and transformative legislation. This commitment comes as the Green Chamber underlines the vital importance of embracing Information and Communication Technology (ICT) across all sectors of the economy to propel Nigeria into an advanced and digitally-connected nation.
The Chairman of the House Committee on Information Technology and Cybercrime, Hon. Adedeji Stanley, made this declaration during the inaugural meeting of the committee. He emphasized the pivotal role that this committee will play in advancing the nation’s IT landscape, leading it towards technological advancement on the global stage.
Hon. Stanley stated, “Let us seize this opportunity to drive the information technology sector to the forefront of our national development. Our collective efforts will be geared towards ensuring that all sectors align with the information technology mandate, and we are committed to introducing legislation that will transform our nation into a true IT-driven powerhouse.”
The committee’s jurisdiction encompasses a wide array of responsibilities, including oversight of the ministry responsible for communications technology, formulating a comprehensive national policy for compliance with communications technology, and liaising with other committees to promote and actualize information technology in Nigeria.
Hon. Adedeji Stanley stressed that the committee’s work will be instrumental in shaping a more connected and secure future for Nigeria. Their oversight extends to key entities such as Galaxy Backbone Limited, Nigeria Data Protection Commission, Nigeria Communication Satellite, National Information Technology Development Agency, and the Annual Budget Estimates, among others.
Hon. Stanley called upon the committee members to approach their responsibilities with dedication and seriousness, highlighting that their collective efforts will reap significant benefits for Nigeria. As they work together, Nigeria is poised to harness the full potential of their work and emerge as a technological powerhouse on the global stage.
